Niederaltaich ist ein Kloster mit zwei kirchlichen Traditionen. Il fut créé en 1927 par les Dominicains pour promouvoir, à l'origine, les études russes et les rencontres avec le monde slave. Le nom "Istina" (la "vérité" en russe) fut choisi dès sa fondation pour souligner cette vocation. Les premières années, l'activité du Centre consista surtout à susciter l'accueil des chrétiens qui, fuyant leur pays, tentaient de reconstituer des communautés en Occident. Simultanément, le Centre s'efforçait de faire connaître aux catholiques de France le christianisme oriental, sa riche tradition théologique, spirituelle et liturgique.
